The tech industry continues to unveil new devices, opening up data streams and presenting opportunities to radically rethink digital product design. ustwo has worked with Google to do this, by shaping the future of the watch face with Android Wear. Taking cues from the rich history of watch face design, and inspired by modern-day digital visualisations, we worked closely with the Android Wear team to create a suite of innovative and progressive watch faces to challenge the conventional representation of time.
Our work bridges the languages of an analog wristwatch and that of a digital interactive watch face, and strikes the right balance between art and utility – creating time-telling experiences that not only look beautiful but, importantly, get stuff done. Without an existing design ecosystem to settle into, we had to start afresh and create our own design principles, rethink the development framework and continuously challenge the way we work.
This process has resulted in an open-source watch face development framework, and the creation of the official Google Android Wear design guidelines, based on the knowledge and insight gained throughout. These resources are open to the design and development community, to inspire them to create watch faces for Wear and to experiment with this exciting new platform.
We're massively excited, and hope that this work sparks meaningful conversations about the possibilities for smart watches and other wearable tech.
Only time will tell.
